LGBTQ2S+
Supporting LGBTQ2s+ WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH
The acronym LGBTQ (also LGBTQAP+, LGBTQA, GLBTIQ, LGBT, LGBTQ and other alternates) is an umbrella term that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer or questioning people. This acronym has its origins in the shorter version lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), which covers a heterogeneous group of LGBT people who often feature together as a group in efforts to gain better social representation and more political support (Salminen 2015:11).
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals are often stigmatized and discriminated against. This population is expected to experience poorer mental health outcomes compared with heterosexual and cis-gendered people, a phenomenon healthcare providers need to take note of and act upon.
There is a rising proportion of refugees that identify as LGBT who present with a range of mental health conditions from posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety to substance abuse.
